A while back, my mom gave me a collection of handwritten recipes. As I looked through them, I saw all of my childhood favorites. I now have a collection of secret recipes passed down from one generation to the next.
The catch? They’re all written in almost illegible cursive, and you have to, “read between the lines” because there isn’t a whole lot of detail on those tiny notecards!
The first time I made this potato soup recipe, I called my mother at least five times. This blog post is as much for me as it is for you! I want to make sure I keep track of ALL the tiny details of this recipe because it is one of my kids’ absolute favorites.
How to Make Creamy Ham and Potato Soup
If this is your first attempt at a creamy potato soup, don’t fret. I’ll walk you through the basics!

- Chop and sautee the onions and celery — your house will smell amazing
- Add chicken stock and diced ham and boil until diced potatoes are tender
- Pour in a milk-based roux to thicken the soup and ENJOY

Creamy Ham and Potato Soup
This creamy ham and potato soup is literally comfort in a bowl.
- 1 Small, 3-lb bag of red potatoes, diced
- 1 Red or yellow onion, diced
- 1 Small bunch of celery, diced
- 1 Package of hickory-smoked diced ham
- 1 tsp Seasoned salt
- 1 tsp Cracked pepper
- 1/4 tsp Dried red pepper flakes
- 4 cups Chicken broth
- 2 cups Milk
- 1/4 cup Flour
- Dice the red potatoes, the red or yellow onion, and the celery. Dice the green onion bulbs, then dice the green onion tops and reserve the green garnish for later.
- Saute the onions and celery until translucent in your stockpot.
- Add the chicken broth and diced potatoes. Bring to boil and then reduce to simmer for approximately 20-minutes or until potatoes are tender.
- Prep the roux by warming the milk and whisking in the flour until lump-free. Slowly stir in the roux and turn your soup. Cook for an additional 5-10 minutes until the broth is simmering. (It must be bubbling for the flour to have a thickening effect.)
- Serve this soon-to-be family favorite as is or with some loaded baked potato toppings — sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and bacon crumbles topped with a dash of “love” (sprinkle on chopped scallions). ENJOY!

Older kids can dice and chop, while younger kids can “chop” scallions (or chives).
